2 Day Betong road ride update

Ride Registration for MKH riders is now closed. We have about 30 road riders who has paid up and committed to ride for the 2 days. Below are the logistics of the ride and MKH ride & support expectations from all registered riders

Meeting logistic

We will meet at Pengkalan Hulu for breakfast at 6.30am. The coffee shop is 50m away (on the left) from the traffic light as you turn to the direction to Betong
Will leave at 7 am sharp for border parking for those who do not wish to drive over to Betong. For those who wish to drive into Betong, take note that you need your car registration card under your name or authorized letter by car owner.
We will quickly unload bicycles and place all our luggage into our official Support car (Phanter's 4WD). Pls keep to 1 small hand luggage since we have limited space to house 20+ bags
We will all proceed to immigration, note that you need Rm2 for immigration services
We will ride to the stating point Betong MTB shop 6km from the border.

For those who do not know where Pengkalan Hulu is and want to convoy to the meeting place, Meet at Petronas Kulim on the BKE after the 2nd toll at 5.30am. We will leave Petronas by latest 5.40am

Day 1 Ride Program

Distance ~125km. with 5-6 relatively short hills above 15% gradient, out of which 2 hills peaked at 19%. Betong roads are full of hills so pls ride conservatively. 1 regroup/water stop at top of 1 19% peak(~40km). 2nd Stop is a Bang Lang Dam for simple breakfast (~55km). There will be some local coffee shops and you need Thai Baht to purchase stuff . Note that the 1 and 2 stops food/water supply will be from our support car. We will use discretion on whether we need the 3rd stop along the ride. Expect to reach back in Betong at around 2.30 where will check into Penthouse Hotel. Rooms will twin sharing and you will decide who you want to partner with. Free and easy beyond this

Day 2 Ride Program

Distance ~50km Start riding at 8am (Malaysia Time) , pls have your breakfast before that, We will leave our luggage in either our support car or at the hotel (to be decided later). will ride to Piyamid tunnel (Tourist attraction spot) as our first destination. You will encounter 4km of climbing of up to 19-20% gradient. From here we have 2 option, for those who want to attempt 22% road climb will ride another 2-2.5km more and come back to Piyamid Tunnel. 2 option is to for riders who want to visit Piyamid Tunnel , you need to bring/prepare your slippers/sport shoes if you want to do this. we will leave Piyamid tunnel at approx 1 hour after arrival. Next short stop is at the Betong Hot Spring. will spend at max 30 min at that location, you can replenish your drinks there. Finally ride back to Betong for lunch (1 hour for lunch) before proceeding back to the border.

Ride and support expectation

Due to the nature of the extremely hilly ride and the fact that we are in Thailand, we will need for all riders to understand and adhere to a couple of simple expectations

1) The 1 and only support car is meant to make sure that we have a smooth and safe ride hence it has to move together with the whole group, it is not meant be an individual support vehicle. So with potentially huge gap in riders ability, adequacy of bike gearing we will bound to have riders who cannot follow the pace, we ask for riders who significantly fall back from the group pace to get on the support car and not hold the group back. you can however rejoin the group at the intended stop points. Bottom line, the support car has to continue to move to ensure safety and convenience of others and also not to get lost in a foreign country. Note that there is not cellphone communication in Betong (no roaming services !!!)

2) Pls be on time for for the rides, we need to work as a team. For those who are significantly late will be left behind and you can your free and easy day

Betong Thailand road ride

Update: Take note that the ride has been pulled in to Feb 19/20.

MKH is planning to organize a trial road ride to Betong Thailand on Feb 26/27. The ride is only open for MKH road riders only. This will be a 2 days 1 night ride covering 125kmh on day 1 and 50kmh on day 2. Due to the hilly terrain, a minimum of 39x26 gearing will be needed. If interested pls contact Kulim Lee or Danny. An estimated payment of rm 50 for room(twin sharing basis) + other logistic payment will be collected by latest 30th January 2011. If there is surplus funds it will be return after the ride. Additional note is that you will have to plan for your carpool arrangement to get to Betong or Malaysian Border. Again note that this ride is only open to MKH riders only to ease logistic planning.

Exciting 220Km ride to Kuala Kangsar

Despite the severe storm and flood warning for Monday, 24 brave riders took on the challenge to ride to Kuala Kangsar and back. ~13 riders made it for the full 220km ride,with the rest started and ended at various locations. It was a smooth ride with planned higher than normal stop points to enable new riders achieve the distance. The group visited the Kuala Kangsar Jamboree site and met up with cycling friends before heading back. One minor accident involving the only lady rider, luckily she escaped with only bruises.

Hilite of the day definitely went to Tannie Wong who joined MKH ride for the 2nd time and achieved 220km on a Mountain bike despite a minor fall and stomach discomfort. congratulations to her and all the other riders who broke personal distance record. Also like to thank Kenny volunteered the support car, Lee for being support driver and another passenger who took lots of photos of the event. Hopefully it will be published on Facebook soon.

Sunday Oct 31, Special >200km ride to Kuala Kangsar and back. This a collective effort ride to beat the 200km for riders who have not done so. Speed will be regulated to contant ~30kmh. Ride will start at 730am SHARP, 15min earlier than normal due to the longer distance . Do wear your MKH jersey if you have them. 12 riders turned up for the ride including friends from TRM,Perlis and Sg Petani. 10 riders managed to surpass the 200km mark. Other than 1 blown tire at about 100km into the ride forcing Nor to abandon the ride, it was relatively smooth. Long stop at Bukit Selambau due to heavy rain
Speed was kept to mostly 32kmh on the flat and and more than 7hrs of cycling. Big thanks to the cooperation from all riders to keep the group together. Congrats to the 5 riders that beat the 200km distance for the first time.

The earlier planned 205KM ride from Jabatan Hutan Kulim starting at 7.15am (30 min earlier than normal ride) is officially ON. First stop (brunch) will be at Sik approx 70Km away. We will than pass thru a series of bridges at Beris lake before arriving Gulau and Nami before turning south wise. Plan to stop every 30-40km depending one availability waterholes that we can find along the way. Pls make sure that you have enough water/food to last your for the first 70km. This ride is a test of endurance for lots of riders hence speed will be kept constant of 30-32kmh along the way. For those who need more info pls call Danny

Planning for a 200KM flat route ride on Sunday June 27. For those who have not broken 200km record, this is your chance to attempt one. Will keep constant coasting speed at ~32kmh. And the story begins........

Is this a holiday resort or a wild animal park or island outing trip or natural fish spa? Well, it is a combination of the above except for the fish spa which is actually part of a beautiful waterfall at Kenyir Lake. All this are part of the Interstate 2010 organised by PCC and it is a cycling event....covering 480km in 3 days from Kuala Kangsar to Tasik Temenggor to Kota Bahru and finally Tasik Kenyir. This year ~25 MKH riders joined the event in 7 support cars. It was a great organised event, credit goes to friends at PCC who year after year thru cycling passions manage to pull together such an incredible event. The route this year is definitely among the best and hotels without a doubt was definitely the best so far. Below are some pictures in random order to provide a glimpse of sweet memories from the 3 day event.

This somewhat special ride for the group with ~50 riders turned up for the ride with the original intent of capturing a new group photo, farewell to Mike Johnston and a shorter than normal ride to cater for new riders. Well we accomplished most of them except for the severely underjudged distance of 138km versus originally planned 100/120km and 3 punctures along the way that stretched the ride to 3pm. Nevertheless it was an enjoyful ride and everyone made safely back. MKH riders will like to bid farewell to Mike and hope that he has opportunity to "repolish up his riding capabilities" in Beijing and extend warm welcome to many new faces that participated in todays ride, knowing that it was a distance record ride for some. We will have farewell ride with Mike Johnston, fellow MKH rider who has been with us for more than a year, who is also our Jersey Sponsor advocator that got us a substantial sponsor $$$. He will be leaving to Beijing for good next week.

Kuala Sapetang ride

172km ride to Kuala Sapetang. Many know that Kuala Sapetang is well known for Mee Udang but few actually know that its previous name was Port Weld which have connection to our Malaysian history. We have 22 riders who decideto punish themselves to ride the whole distance for a bowl of 10 large prawn "Mee Udang" . There were a bit of added excitement this time around with the "short cut" 5km kampong road from the trunk road to Kuala Sapetang crossing under the North South toll highway. He we rode beside the highway for about a total 500 meters before going under it. It was an interesting adventure to ride road bike in a relatively rideable kampong road and decided to ride thru it again on the way back. Another unusual stop was at a cendol store in Kulim. Overall a pretty control ride and glad that every one made it safely.

Over 300 riders turned up fo the ride in all forms bicycles ranging from steel road bikes and steel mountain bikes to current modern carbon road and mountain bikes. Riders ranging from 10 year olds to over 60 year old veterans, coming from all over the country to participate in the 80km event covering the outskirts of Kulim and greater Kedah. Started from township of Kulim and headed towards Bukit Hijau as the mid point to regroup and breakfast stop. A rare site to see the whole rest area being filled with riders and bicycles. Big thanks to all participants, marshalls and organizing committee for organizing such event to cater for all span of riders and also keeping it as safe as possible. First time organisers from several cycling group in the northern region pulled to gether an amazing ride across the border to Thailand. Total distance for the 2 days was about 230 km with 215 riders on the road ranging from kids to veteran riders. Many MKH riders joined the ride. The route was very friendly with only one major climb. All MKH riders arrived safely despite 2 MKH riders was involved in a mass accident. One worthful MKH rider to mention is Khalib who brought his whole family consisting of wife and 3 children completed the whole journey ON BICYCLES...youngest is 4 years old, congrats to the super Dad..
Many thanks to TRM,RamlySP,Megat(MKH) and Janamanjung group and others that made this event enjoyful and memorable one.

Annual Lenggong Ride

This is the annual Sumpitan Lenggong ride, this year we have the pleasure of Ipoh UCI team riding from to south to meet up at Kampong Masjid before riding up the 9km mountain road. A total of over 30 riders in total started from both Kulim and Lenggong (after riding one loop via Kuala Kangsar) coordinate effort and timing to meet, rode up the steep mountain stretch of Sumpitan and finally end up in Lenggong for the famous fresh water fish lunch. MUST READ - Key Message from Lee,Nizam and Danny

Last Sunday's Century ride it was a major REPEATED embarrassment for the MKH cycling group where lots of riders came extremely late impacting fellow riders who want to ride with the fast group. This we see as a discipline issue causing disrespect to the event organisers as well as fellow MKH riders.

We would like to stress that discipline is part sportmanship and will not tolerate any lack of it moving forward. So in future we will start all rides and events sharp on time with no exceptions. Those who are late will have to ride on their own and there will be no provision for waiting or slowing down the peloton once past the start time.

All Kulim rides will start at 7.45am SHARP. Ride briefing will be at 7.40am.
We expect cooperation from all riders to uplift discipline and respect for others in this matter. Remember our tag line "MKH=Maju Ke Hadapan" and not the opposite.

Ipoh Century ride Update

More than 30 MKH riders participated in this year's edition of the Ipoh Century ride, Overall great route and traffic control along the route. It was great to meet so many riders from all across the country participating in this event. As for the results , MKH had more than half dozen riders in the in the breakaway group despite multiple punctures/technical problem and manage to get 2 podium finishes. Kudos to all MKH rides who finished the event.
Thank you to KRI/UCI as well as MKH folks who has help out fellow riders in one way or another during the entire event. Congratulations to KRI on successfully pulling together such a great event for the for Malaysia, hoped that they can continue organizing more events in the future

About 80 riders spanning from Kedah all the way to KL joined the ride including 7 Cameron Highland MTB riders that specially drove down from Cameron to Ipoh and rode back to their home town. This is a great example of simple but yet friendly ride, First time after 3-4 jointly trips that there was orderly/discipline ride from Simpang Pulai to Tapah reducing lots of road congestion and danger pose to both motorist and cyclist on the busy trunk road. On behalf on MKH cycling group we would like to thank UCI for pulling this together. We hope that we MKH/UCI can pull together more one day (Sunday) rides in vincinity between Ipoh/Penang in the future where night stopovers can be avoided to create fun and opportunity for fellow cyclist.

Another exciting event for MKH - Nibong Tebal Jamboree

Around 10 MKH riders took part on Sunday Jun 21 Nebung Tebal Jamboree. We had a fair share of mechanical problems forcing some riders to retire early. 3 riders manage to clinch top 10 positions. Overall quite challenging course with good direction signage, organizers could do with improvements on dangerous areas to reduce participant injuries

MKH Jersey is ready for distribution by this weekend

For those who ordered the 2009 edition jersey, it has arrived and will be ready for collection by this weekend thru the respective rept that you submitted your payment. We have mixed news about the jersey..the good part is that it arrived slightly earlier than expected but...the bad news is that the manufacturer charges us USD5 extra/jersey for the color scheme which leaves us in the negative zone currently. We expect thru post sales negotiation to get a discount but it is not confirmed. What all this means is that we came out short to purchase the T-shirt. The committee decided to delay the purchase of the t-shirts pending the outcome of discount negotiation hence will not collect additional funding at this juncture.
